The first step to a successful turkey hunt is scouting. Get out into the woods before the season starts to locate roosting areas, feeding areas, and travel routes. Look for signs such as tracks, droppings, feathers, scratches on trees or logs where turkeys have been dusting themselves off or scratching for food.
Calls & Decoys
Using calls can be highly effective when trying to attract a turkey. There are many different types of calls available on the market including box calls, slate calls or diaphragm mouth calls. Experiment with different types of calls until you find one that works best for you.
Another great way to lure turkeys within range is by using decoys. Set up realistic looking hen decoys near your hiding spot which will make male turkeys think there is potential breeding nearby.
Camo Clothing & Concealment
Turkeys are known for their keen eyesight making camouflage clothing essential for blending in with your surroundings while avoiding detection from wary birds.
Concealment is key! Choose natural brushy spots to hide behind or set up blinds so as not to spook any approaching birds.
Movement & Shot Placement
Turkeys will often respond quickly once they hear something so it’s important not move too much whilst waiting quietly behind cover.
When lining up your shot placement aim where all three body sections meet (head-neck junction) this increases chances of an instant kill without destroying meat
